Dublin and Laois will face off again for the second time this season at Dr Cullen Park on Saturday the 28th of August with the winners progressing to the All-Ireland final to face Kerry or Tyrone.

Laois have done extremely well under Joe Higgins this year and bounced back from their Leinster final defeat to Dublin with hard fought wins over Kildare and Ulster champions Monaghan last day out. Tracey Lawlor and Noreen Kirwan have been in excellent scoring form, but have they progressed enough to beat last year’s All-Ireland finalists?

Dublin have had a patchy year with relegation to Division 2 of the League, followed up by a Leinster Final win and a win over Clare in the quarter finals to progress to the Semi Final. But they are on an upward curve and with Sinead Aherne in sparkling form, expect that curve to continue.

Here’s an interview with Dublin captain Denise Masterson with the squads below:

Shamrock Bowl XXIV which will take place on Saturday the 7th of August at 2:00 p.m in Tallaght Stadium features the two clubs who have been the standout programmes in Ireland over the past decade. Both teams have extensive experience of playing in championship games and have made their mark in Europe. There is an intense rivalry between both teams, fueled by regular meetings in recent Shamrock Bowls. Both teams also have a claim on being the best team in Ireland and Shamrock Bowl XXIV will settle this matter.

The Dublin Rebels have been unbeaten during the regular season and play-offs, winning an impressive 9 straight games. During this time they defeated the Vikings in Limerick. Hence their claim to be Ireland’s best team. The margin of their victories has been extremely impressive and they ended the regular season with the number one ranked offence and defence.

However, the UL Vikings have had the distraction of European competition in 2010 to blame for dropping some points during the regular season. They became the first Irish team ever to win a European title when the won the EFAF Atlantic Cup in June. Consequently, they have been ranked in the top 20 teams in Europe – the first Irish team to achieve such a ranking for over 20 years.

Kenny Cunningham came ‘home’ last month to make a presentation to the players from Darndale FC – and he paid tribute to the work being done at the progressive club. Cunningham, a 70-time capped former Ireland skipper, hails from nearby Priorswood. He said: “I’m only two minutes down the road and my family is still down there – and I know that this club is all about community. Anything that pulls people together and that plays a positive role in a player’s development has got to be applauded – and that’s what the lads have done here.”

Darndale FC began life in 1988 with just one team but it has grown since then into a top NDSL side with ten teams from U-7s up to U-18s. Chairman Thomas Daly explained: “We looked at it and thought there were a lot of footballers from this area who were playing for teams outside the area. We wanted to keep it in the area so about five years ago we decided to get the word out; get managers in and it’s huge now. Dublin City Council have built us a fantastic clubhouse with six changing rooms. It was badly needed in the area and it’s just brilliant. There’s an FAI development officer down here called Jimmy Mowlds and he has been fantastic to us. Everything is looking up for Darndale FC.

As part of the on-going partnership between Dublin City Council and the FAI, an U-18 Street League took place recently in Hardwicke Street flats. The league featured four teams: Hardwicke St (winners), Henrietta St (runners up), Snack Box (from The Pocket / Dorset St) and Ballbough. The competition, which took place over two weeks, was run by Bradog’s Darren O’Conner and the DCC / FAI Development Officer for the North East Inner City, Christy Lougheed. Many thanks to the teams for their participation and the Centre Manager, John Hogg, for the use of the facility.
